I'll say it. The hips don't lie.

I like the AMTSh variant in solid gray coat, with pylons loaded with various fancy modules. It's very modern-looking but nostalgic at the same time.

It's odd because when the Hip entered service, cars had tailfins.

During the Protracted Struggle we were told of a Hip gunship/troop carrier variant variant supposedly in front-line service in GSFG and with the Luftstreitkräfte that had hardpoints for six of those big 57mm rocket pods AND launch rails for four laser guided ATGMs, AND a pair of door gunners, and it could supposedly haul all of this AND a full platoon of twenty-four desantniks. The engines, I guess, were made out of pure stalinium, because the real thing can only get off the ground with just those six rocket pods if the fuel tanks are half empty.

>cars had tailfins.
Glorious.

The idea of using it as a gunship has always struck me as odd; haven't read any memoirs or recaps of thereof on the topic but that probably stemmed from someone up high requesting jack-of-all-trades capabilities, or perhaps as a sales pitch for an export version?
Transport helicopter crews don't really get atgm training, it's counterproductive to just go "Ok Ivan/Hans, today you be of launching missiles at tanks, but first drop off a platoon in this grid", far better to just send in an attack helicopter along. It would also run cover during the disembarkation.

Afaik in reality these multipurpose hips either carry troops and no other payload, or carry specialized external payload (e.g. EW modules) and have the interior filled with extra fuel instead (videos can be found where there is a huge yellow fuel tank or two where the troops usually sit). Assigning multiple tasks at the same time seems very impractical.
Door gunners still appear to be the norm and it does make sense, but seeing what they are armed with it appears to be more of a formality too.

On a related note of versatility, even Hinds have a troop compartment. But while originally it was intended to carry vdv or something, afaik no one practiced that after Afghanistan, because again payload is limited, so it was either empty or inhabited by the crew chief brought along as a good luck charm. Alternatively you could load it with your junk along hopping from airfield to airfield, or take passengers for such routine flights.

Pic mostly unrelated.

Supposedly the Hip cost significantly less than the Hind, both to manufacture and to operate, though authoritative figures are difficult to point to because the USSR didn't price or measure any of this the way "capitalists" would.

The Hind, on paper, could carry a full rifle section of eight plus all their gear. In Afghanistan it was found that if they were bringing troops to a location where they would have to disembark under fire, no more than two or three were likely to be able to exit a Hind before mortar rounds started landing in the LZ. This kind of defeats the purpose of the Hind. Also the Hip has those giant sideways clamshell doors at the back of the hull, allowing Igor and the boys to exit with a quickness. This almost compensates for the Hip's lack of armor. Almost.

The Hip did have provision for wired hardpoints, up to three on each side, maybe more for less common variants like the Mi-8TVK. I know the Ukies are using the armed version with rocket pods for indirect fire harassment & interdiction against known or suspected Russian Troop concentrations, supply routes, and so on. They bolt on the launchers, load them up with a shitload of Cold War surplus rockets, and then Boris takes off. He has a map, maybe printed out, maybe on a tablet. He flies nap-of-the-earth to such-and-such map coordinates, then he points the nose at the intended target area, accelerated, does a pop-up, and with the nose pointed up at the angle from the notes, at the speed and altitude from the notes, and he presses the big red "fire all ze rockets" button. The rockets fly several miles, in an arc up and then back down, and land in an area a grid square across or more, while Boris hauls ass for the airbase. This is not a particularly accurate method of fire, and I have heard the suggestion that it is employed more for purposes of morale than in any realistic hope of hitting anything significant. But they do it every day, sometimes while being shot at.
