I tried to tell my uncle that I installed Linux on my PC, he just yelled at me for 30 minutes saying no professional IT guy uses Linux. Probably should've told him I wasn't doing IT stuff.

There's always the various "ameliorated" script packages that promise to de-bloat such-and-such version of Windows and prevent M$ from silently turning the spyware back on and silently reinstalling all the stuff you just roto-rooter'd out.

It is arguable that the scripts introduce risks of their own.  In theory they are open source and have been widely audited.  In practice I wouldn't try running them on anything I cared very much about and having the system in question air-gapped would go a fairly long distance towards addressing my security concerns.

Mint is fine.  It's pretty stable on this hardware, except for some intermittent sound and Bluetoof problems.  I plug the headphones into the 3.5mm socket on the back side panel and it seems to have addressed it.

I think right now Mint is the preferred newbie distro, so you can give it a shot. If you have an external or secondary drive of some sort I'd use that for files initially if you do want to toy around with different distros, because then you can hop easily without needing to worry about losing files. Some other contenders would be Arch, Ubuntu, or any other that has a large community since having a community (especially with a wiki such as with Arch) makes figuring things out a much smoother process. Ultimately a Linux distro is just the package manager and DE you use, and many will give you a DE choice anyways, so I wouldn't fall for any super niche meme distros, you will want something with a lot of people in case you run into problems

For gayming?  Windoze.  Proton, WINE, and so on, can run some Windows software, but not nearly all of it.  It is not difficult to set up a dual boot system if you want to learn Linux.  But if you are asking which distro to put on your daily driver, you are not yet ready.

Unless there is specific software you use for some profession, WINE runs everything. Dual booting is really more trouble than it's worth. And proton runs basically any game, I play blizzard games through proton just fine

I don't think Linux has any serious performance negatives to windows anymore, negligible to anyone who isn't some autist trying to squeeze every last bit of fps out of a game when it doesn't even matter. And unless you want to play those invasive anticheat ridden games, you can run anything through proton on steam.

Wine does NOT run everything. Unless you mean it launches the game and from there on its a toss up if it works or not (if the game is older than 5 years. Exaggerating of course.  It's more 10-13 years old games)

Honestly, if it's a new computer then try Linux because it's free. If it works, great, if it doesn't then use Windows instead. My personal advice is default to Linux *if you can* otherwise use Windows. A lot of Microslop issues can be solved using an Enterprise IoT LTSC version with a couple Group Policies set.

Only games from around the early 2000s will you have trouble running on Wine. I tried getting touhou 6 running and that game was made for such an old ass windows version that wine had trouble, but even games like that you need patches trying to run on windows. Mid to late 2000s onwards and anything runs fine. There's plenty of emulators for any console game and even older games than that sometimes have decompilations and ports (such as DOOM). If a game doesn't just immediately werk with proton, you can check protondb to find people who played the game to find steps to get it working. I'm not sure exactly which games you're referring to which don't run on Linux but I routinely play stuff made in the early 2010s just fine
