Personally from what I remember https://youtu.be/r7Ay96NT34M this was the vid (reuploaded) that “planted the seed” for me. I remember going on to do the whole “I hate furrys” thing for a while where I’d consume furry content ironically before manning up and deciding that was more gay than just admitting to myself I’m a furfag.
We might be a cancer. But I think it's an interesting phenomenon to explore.
>>132555 (OP)
I don't subscribe to the idea that you "become" a "furry" it's just whether or not you like anthros, and I have for a long time I just didn't get "into it" much until recently. The whole stigma arises from the vocal minority of weirdos in fursuits and with fursonas and who post fetish content in public, but it's evidently not a very unnatural thing to just like anthros judging by the big "hmofa" movements as of late.
>>132562
>whether or not you like anthros
That’s the textbook definition of a furry.
>A furry is a person who has an active interest in anthropomorphic animals—which means animal characters that have human traits like speech, walking on two legs, and wearing clothes (such as characters in Zootopia or Robin Hood).

Sure, but the interesting, tangential question is the one Rev posed in the previous iteration of this thread: "Why?" Why anthros in particular over any other fantasy? That, I think, deserves exploration.

I liked reading books when I was younger and was fucking retarded so I didn't know how to pirate books. I love manga/comics specifically so I eventually found out webcomics existed. After that it all started to click after I found out the dogshit world of furry webcomics. Looking back at it almost all these comics were pretty bad but now I stay in the community because I love the art form.

when i was little i drew a lot and i played a lot of spore and liked evolution. pair that with my love of animals (wolves and foxes) and i thought it would be cool if they evolved into intelligent bipeds
i remember watching these old youtube videos which were just slideshows of fox characters (i don't think they were anthro) and thinking they were cool. and i found OMFA, which is a webcomic from about 2011(?). i also really liked starfox and always played as him on my bootlegged wii that had super smash bros 64 on it
in the grand scheme of things, i didn't really consume that much furry media, i mostly came up with shit in my head
also i remember watching this animation as a kid and when i was too young to understand the sexual connotations

Sorting people into neat categories seems to grow harder every day. For what it's worth, everyone on this website's a furry to me-- unless you've no interest in anthros at all, which would make you... a /b/ poster for whatever reason. And never hitherto arriving on this site had I heard the argument that a fursuit was a prerequisite of being labelled as such, even from self-identified furries, most of whom don't own fursuits due to their cost.

Though I understand why many of you are wary of the term and its connotations. And I suppose I don't like taking on labels in general either, in part also due to the same potential for disrepute by association with whomever else happens to share that label. I simply am what I am.
But then I also understand the perpetual need to categorize things. Categories are useful. In that regard, ask the "average person" and they'll quickly put us all in the same box, mostly. Though I also wouldn't blindly trust the "average person's" ability to categorize... blah blah blah... in conclusion: we deserve destruction.

>>132752
wdym to me? I thought this is being objective. If everyone has their own definition, this is going to be a mess and we will be going in circles.
Because, yeah, "you liked that furry thing means you're furry" sound simple and right. Or is it? How much furry things did they like and for how long? And what are "furry things"? Media? Activities? Philosophy?? Nigger, this is very heavily depends on context.
Let's make a couple of extreme cases. First we have Joe #1 who went on some furcon. Is he a furry? He was with his neurodivergent friend Doe who asked to make him a company. He engaged in action, even got aids almost, but in the end Joe said, that it was mid and not interesting, though if Doe wants Joe to accompany Doe again, then Joe'll go, because friendship is magic. Is Joe a furry??
Second we have Joe #2 who have his walls covered with furry art and who goons to furries every single day. Is he a furry? This Joe is a neet antisocial freak. He doesn't talk to anyone irl or on the internet. 1000 twitter goons followed, but doesn't even leave a comment anywhere. Joe isn't interested in anything except collecting goons & consuming media without any care about the subject matter besides his own aesthetic satisfaction and fulfillment of basic needs. Every day. Silently, in his dark dark room... Wageslave too. And plays osu or touhou or something like that. Is Joe a furry??

If it's all about how you're being called, i.e. subjective judgement, then it's not true and there isn't any absolute border. Maybe we are missing something? Yeah we fucking are. The word "fandom". It is a furry fandom. It's not an ethereal group of "furries". It's a fan dom. The dome of fans. Are you in the dome of faggot fans? Or you're outside of it? It's a group of joes who are in the "furry fandom". If a joe leaves this dome he's becoming just a joe - he's outside of the dome.
>"A fandom is a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the objects of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices, differentiating fandom-affiliated people from those with only a casual interest."
Also not everything about anthropomorphic animals is furry fandom, but all the furry fandom is about anthropomorphic animals. You just don't want to put an effort into analyzing the situation and context. I'm very very annoyed by that and it made me angry. I even used the n-word, sorry.

I think it's worth discussing, even if-- at the end of the day-- you're not going to get anywhere because I really don't think there is a concrete definition written anywhere so all arguments will be rendered moot (no, not that one). The one Purrgem laid out is the one I heard ages ago, but it seems it will continue to be disputed because people-- understandably-- are resistant to association with "furries". Alas, I am a little busy right now. Someone look into other words with similar histories. You'll probably find a few in politics, philosophy, and the like.

I dont mean to be rude but by making this a subjective the whole conversation is a non starter. In my opinion a furry is someone who is interested in anthropomorphic animals, and since its my opinion it is so. This is why I am asking you to be more rigorous about your definition so we can actually discuss the finer points of being a furry. If you want when describing yourself you could say "I am a furry however I do not consider myself a part of the fandom" but if thats your only dig then you are still by all means a "furry".

>Your thinking to hard into this shit
Why are you not? The process before the computer outputs 0 or 1 is pretty metal. But very solid too. Likewise you can't be a furry outside a furry fandom. That defies the only single purpose of this word's original meaning.
Everything outside the fandom is post-furry. Modern furry or meta-modern furry, but not the classic type for sure. We're far past the original roots. Even n*zis have their own descendants - neonazis. And uneducated people call them all the same... Wow, that's actually a fine analogy.
There's not a single furry on this site. They have different rules and activities. Having a single common idea or aesthetics preference creates a relation, but that's mostly it. You all are neofurries. Sounds very right.

I have a very real definition of a fandom that is greentexted and that is taken from an official wiki page. Reread it and if it matches with what you're experiencing, then you're a part of the fandom.

Also on wiki about the contents of the furry fandom
"The furry fandom is a subculture defined by an interest in anthropomorphic animal characters.[1][2] Members of the fandom, known as furries, often identify with their own personalized characters known as fursonas,[3] and may wear fursuits,[4] engaging with fellow furries on the internet and at furry conventions.[5]"

I don't see even a single fucking fursona on here and this says "often" (don't try to make one right now). The only things left I see is "internet" and "anthropomorphic animals". Although, "animals" extended basically into anything human-like – anthros. Look where are they and where are we. It's like neanderthal and homo sapiens.

It's true that I'm a part of some kind of fandom (hello hello, this site). I got all the criteria passed by definition. And we got anthros, yes, but that's absolutely not the furry fandom we're having here.
Okay. I'm not so busy anymore but I also don't care too much anymore. geg.

Notice the qualifiers. Fursonas and fursuits are not prerequisites to being a furry. The "interest in anthropomorphic animal characters" is the only definite part, which we all effectively fall under.

Growing up, I had also felt rather... peculiar, about female anthropomorphic animal people that I'd occasionally see in various media. However, I don't think it was until World of Warcraft: Cataclysm released with its worgen race that it really sowed the seeds of Funny Animal People in me.
Later in my teens, I discovered the concept of Tulpas and in my strive for companionship in those lonely years I created my imaginary waifu. This Tulpa was an anthropomorphic cat. I was also playing Skyrim at the time and the khajiit piqued my interest, which influenced it.

The main reason why I had chosen an anthropomorphic animal instead of a human, however, was that I found it unrealistic that any real human woman could love me. By choosing a 'fictional' species, I could that she was simply wired differently.
That Tulpa would eventually become The Cat Eloisa that I sometimes draw. She hasn't been a Tulpa for a great many years, but I still draw her as an OC.

This example doesn't work in your favor. If we accept the definition of "dancer" to be "a person who dances", then everyone in your example is a dancer. Whatever adjectives you choose to apply or whichever other groups each particular individual happens to belong to are irrelevant to the common thing they share: that they are all dancers.

Also treating "people" like a homogenous labeling mass isn't gonna work. Yeah, it's generally like that, but "generally" isn't true and there's individuals who have different judgements about different things which breaks your imaginary system.
If you consider listening to masses because le hecking democracy and a lot of people can't be wrong then that's on you, just don't teach that to others, so they walk in circles from opinion to opinion and waste their time.

That is the way language works. Yes, in this hypothetical, they're all dancers still, regardless of whatever other characteristics they possess. If one is wearing a blue shirt and the other a red shirt, they're both dancers nonetheless. One might be the worst person in the world and the other a saint, but so long as both are dancing, they are-- by definition-- dancers. Following your reasoning, we would need a term for every single possible combination of traits. Suddenly, the red-shirted and blue-shirted individuals dancing would each need their own term. That is "ridiculous".
In defense of Purrgem's appeal to the general public's perception: that is, again, the basis of language: consensus amongst a useful mass of people.

Following any reasoning to an extreme will be nonsensical. As I've said, we have nazis and neonazis. Why? Are they different? They have one thing in common, but we have as much as two different words.
And dancing gangnam style doesn't make you a dancer. If you chop trees only for yourself you're not a wood chopper. If you go to a shooting range and waste a dozen of rounds once in a week you're not a rifleman.
Some people may call you one thing some another. It doesn't make it true. What makes it true is if you have a dancer or wood chopper diploma or certified by some scientific system. If you want to make it true because "we all agreed" you can, but I can too, as anyone else.
The point is: at least don't say "You're this, and this is true. You can't argue because most people say this.". Not true, confuses people and annoying.

people in the 40s didn't have autism, post 70s mass pornography production, or the internet. now that we do people will probably associate any "anthro enjoyer" as a degenerate, and in most cases they would probably be right

Look up the term "Tijuana Bible." Porn of cartoon characters is much older than the Internet. There was enough of a market that they were printed and sold, just not widely publicized.

The Internet didn't make us like this. It just made it obvious.

How much evidence do you need? Marquis de Sade had a generic upbringing of the time, psychologists studied these people hundreds of years ago.

I remember one explanation for feet paraphilia, which I found funny was - when a man discovers women don't have penises, the last thing he saw prior he develops a fixation upon.

I think this was quoted to freud, though I read it from someone else's writings.

Well for me when I was like 14 i hated furries mostly because I simply thought they were cringe and everything and I was immature. I wasn’t terminally online back then and I actually had friends when I was in middle school (I don’t have any real friends. All my so-called friends are fake now so no I don’t have any friends now)

I either hated furries or didn’t care until I started to find artwork of furry girls especially of loona when I first saw that stuff I was like impressed and honestly thought to myself “oh shit this is so hot looking!” and it just went from there. I can’t remember the first anthro girl artwork I had saved (I had well over 1000 furry girl photos that I had on my old computer, but due to the way I transferred it and my laziness. I literally lost all of the memes and furry girl photos I had on my new computer. A lot of it was high-quality and high class stuff too so I quite literally had to start all over I am so pissed off to this day)

I honestly don’t know where I even found those first artwork anyways was it from newgrounds or some Discovery Channel server? Was it from a guy I was friends with? I honestly don’t know but that’s where my love for anthro girls came from. I just think they look better and have better personalities than most real women sure it’s unrealistic but I just think it’s wholesome and I think it’s nice to see hot furry chicks and the people who make the lore behind them.

And before you ask, I am white. I’m not Mexican or Filipino. (Unlike Instagram gooners haha) so that’s pretty much all I have to say on that. that’s where it all started!

Likewise I started to like furries more because I hated most of the people around me and my family treats eachother like shit, but I guess it also had its roots in me owning obscene amounts of stuffed toys because I liked animals and relatives constantly gifted stuffed animals to me as well as my older brother leaving his old ones for me.

Nah, essay cancelled. I don't have it in me, plus no one was going to read it, plus you're all still furries lowk dgaf. I was going to do it in a cheekily pretentious style complete with a frontispiece with anthro bihs on it or sum such but fluff all that lol.

I get off (copiously) to the fantasy of having a stable family with a loving loyal anthro trad wife and the dream of going through life together hand in hand every step of the way, growing old surrounded by our beloved children and grandchildren, leaving them a safe and peaceful world.
Sadly, this remains something that can only be fantasized about, for the time being.

I get off (copiously) to the fantasy of having PGS with a horny lusty anthro pooch and the dream of going through life together dih in snatch every step of the way because I am as much of a fucking animal as my hypothetical anthro friend.
I used to be a very spergy Nintendo kid so it kind of naturally came in. More specifically I really got into pokemon and I got into this channel called "TheLatiosMaster". I browsed some of the art and subject topics of the channel and got into some furry sites and eventually got into the furry thing as I grew up. I kind of got desensitivized to the concept of furries in a way. Though I regard those kind of guys as freaks now, I don't like associating with that stuff much anymore.
