What, fanfiction? But you're not wrong. HATSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS cries out for a compassionate editor at the very least. The last time I checked it was over a quarter of a million words long. The author will hint at stuff, start to go in one direction, and then it looks like he just completely forgets about the Significant Plot Point for which he was doing all the buildup. And then it's abandoned for six months or a year and he comes back with a slice-of-life chapter.
Missy is obnoxious when we first meet her but she grows on you, sort of like a fungus. Maybe she IS a fungus. No one knows. The author says in notes that he is doing this in collaboration with the artist who created her, and that he doesn't hear from the artist for months at a time. That's fair enough, I guess, but still.
Look, as monstergirls go she's uncommonly charming and uncommonly cute. The other main character is a human guy who's really stiff-necked and stubborn, as befits a story that started out looking like it was going to be a slow romance story in favor of tangents where the author hints that he's going to drop The Big Reveal about What She Actually Is, that he then drops for another scene of her making breakfast, or talking to her plushies, or another scene of her playing Lucille Ball to Leo's long-suffering Desi Arnaz. Did I mention that we're a quarter of a million words in? For comparison the Bible is only 800,000 words.
I keep checking the story anyway because Missy is just that lovable, and because the author, for all his other faults, has great talents for dialogue and characterization. The author, or at least someone claiming to be him, would periodically show up in the /hmofa/ threads at 4chins and say "no, really, we have a plan, we have a plot outline, you'll see." And everyone would nod along and say, great, we can't wait. That went on for years. For all I know he's still doing it.
