realistically nobody is doing art solely for money, it's a path of passion that you pursue because the thought of making money through your hobby is extremely appealing, as opposed to spending the next 40 years of your life doing some boring monotonous tasks your boss tells you to. You're absolutely deluded if you think money isn't a factor though, someone could be a SFW artist that just desires to make more money, I've seen multiple artists who started as a SFW furry artist but became more lewd as time went on, from simply cute anthro characters to anthro characters with bigger assets to full on porn.

nah. it sucks. i tried it, got like $500 from a few works and gave up. it's grift in the end of the day,anyways.
what really sucks is that there's realistically no middle ground between that or stepping into the goycatyle wagie conveyor belt.

I mean $500 doesn't sound bad from a few works, depends a lot on the timeframe, amount of time spent on each, and how much a "few" actually is.
It depends a lot on your quality and customer service and niche. I remember watching Caleb Hammer interviewing a brony porn artist and he made like $100 a piece which each took about an hour. Which sounds like an outrageous rate until you realize that that's all the demand he can get and it's partially a result of his ebegging, he made max like $4000 a month. I think as a NSFW artist grows they become more business-minded and just more egotistical. Have you noticed that these artists' styles stagnate so badly? I think they lose their passion for art as it goes from a simple fun hobby to their 9-5. 
I don't see why there can't be a middleground, if people can manage a 9-5 and a family at the same time a 9-5 and drawing can't be too hard.

I have no experience with it, but everything I'd heard about it was that it is a horrifying, soul-crushing way to earn a living.  Not only do you never know where your next commission, and therefore your next meal and next rent payment are coming from, but you also have to take requests.

I have spoken with artists, or at least they said they were artists ("on the Internet no one knows you're a dog," amirite?) who said they poured their hearts into creating cute characters and giving them background and lore.  And then they would get an email from someone who wanted a picture of one of them getting gang-respectd then tortured and vored by eleven obscure Harry Potter characters plus a self-insert wearing a gimp mask. If you want to pay the rent this month you can't be picky about what you will or won't do.  He said it all disgusted him so much that he went back to washing dishes at the Sizzler. Your mileage may vary, of course.
