Well-made and/or context-fitting pepes and wojaks are alright. Same goes for AI.
Soyjaks are always cringe though (except for the pointing soyjak meme, that one can stay).

Would you say being overused and commercialized would make it lose some of its appeal?
It's just that 10 years ago it was fringe and kind of edgy to use, with polarized responses. Today I see pepes on, like, random old ladies' temu crocs. They probably don't even know what it is, probably think it's a random frog.
Trying to figure out if it's just a hipster contrarian thing or being diluted does negatively affect the meme value. It definitely does past a certain point, but whether we are there yet is up for debate.

i don't think you guys understand what the word "edgy" means. if you're being edgy it means you know what you are saying is wrong and you are doing it for provocation / entertainment purposes. someone who is being edgy knows and agrees that the edgy thing is bad. if you thought what you were saying WASN'T bad, you wouldn't call it edgy, you would just call it speaking the truth. words have meanings

Not necessarily, it's more about pushing the boundaries towards darker themes, so to speak. Nowhere does it imply the person being edgy disagrees with himself.
The 2016 Pepe was a part of a counter culture. It still is, to an extent, but to me it seems it has lost some of its edge (in the idiomatic sense this time) due to having been unwittingly used by normies.
