>The US, any modern democracy really: living standards and economy are just miserable, "DOCTOS, IT'S BECOMING HECKING IDIOCRACY OYYY", people actively voting their own rights away, consecutively shittier technology.

>China, authoritarian: It's quite miserable and you have to learn to keep your mouth shut, but everyone is better fed, educated, the economy is stable. Had also just made various tech/scientific breakthroughs in the span of a few years to months, to even weeks.

What the fuck is happening, I thought everyone told me democracy was "le hecking wholesomerino" or something. pic related

Neither China nor democracy is all that it’s cooked up to be. I believe the problem is the world changed so fast each generation now lives in a different world. Everything is a democracy btw, the people have to consent to the government somewhat or else the state would fail. Stability is ultimately what economics likes and it just so happens democracy’s tend to be the most stable.
>>10454 (OP)
Democracy is only as good as its citizens anon. If a democracy has stupid citizens it will be a shithole

Conversely, an autocracy is only as good as its leaders. If an autocracy has good leaders it will be a utopia (as least until a successor comes along who is an idiot)

Back to stability tho even if your dictators benevolent your nation is inherently less stable and businesses act accordingly. Autocracy’s are almost exclusively poor, even china has a shit per capita with a good chunk of it’s citizens in squalor.

Well put.

>your nation is inherently less stable and businesses act accordingly
That does sound reasonable but can be easily disputed. China itself has world-leading businesses, obviously. Then there are the gulf states like UAE and SA that have lots of money invested in them despite being rather small. Not even getting repeatedly bombed has resulted in the capital leaving.
But yes, being stable/predictable is attractive to investors.

>Autocracy’s are almost exclusively poor,
To be fair, most of what passes for democracies these days are also poor. First world countries are more of an exception, and even then some are coasting on their past accomplishments. Conversely, Singapore is an autocracy but are not poor.

> even china has a shit per capita with a good chunk of it’s citizens in squalor.
Ok while GDPPP is a viable metric, it only tells a fraction of the story and these guys had a rough couple of centuries. Looking at the trends should probably yield more. What were their lives like 30 years ago? Are they better off now? Let's take a stable democracy like the UK and ask the same questions.
Idk how their rural workers live (judging by how cheap their labor seems to be - not good) but those digital bug utopias they keep building don't look like squalor. Apparently historically they never really encouraged their citizens to be go-getters so perhaps the masses don't mind making shoes all day and then heading back home (that they own for life, as opposed to renting) and treat themselves to a bowl of rice.
>>10454 (OP)
China is good exclusively in its cities. 90% of the country is a rural shithole

The brain drain in the Whitehouse caused by the Trump administration led to them explicitly leaking documents that confirm just that btw. But you wouldn't know as you're suckling on the teet of Russian disinformation

>What were their lives like 30 years ago? Are they better off now?
Yes. They are by no means rich, but their lives are far better than they were 30 years ago. We're talking about a country with a population in the billions, what they’ve accomplished is truly impressive regardless of negative bias. Remember, we have India as a counterpart and we all know how things are over there.

My point exactly. Also note that China is constantly antagonized by the West, with some doors outright closed to them, whereas the relations with India are far warmer, and still China has pulled ahead.
Which is not to say they are all having a great time there and that there aren't some shady things about their society (people shitting themselves when asked about the events on Tiananmen square on camera is kind of telling, plus don't they send spies to watch over their exchange students' behavior? Vile.). I was briefly in and around Beijing last year and it kind of sucked, but not because the city itself was bad, just kind of proletarian (for the lack of a better word) in nature, plus it was matter of personal (dis)taste. Otherwise not better or worse than a euro city at a glance.

Chinas IQ is inflated as their districts tend to over report for more funding.
>>10458
China and the gulf states still aren’t great economically with a vapid middle class mostly consisting of peasants. I think in Chinas case just the fact there’s a billion of them if 10% are well off that’s still a massive market. Personally I believe Chinas more in a grey area compared to a tried and true autocracy but they lean closer to it. The gulf states are likely just an exception by geography imo.

Gulf states do stand out but it has to be more than just the geography or Iran would've been raking in the big bucks. Politics and the overall course the country is taking also matters there.

Ireland being so high up on both axes looks funny. Most Irish that I know are living from paycheck to paycheck and god help them should they be laid off because rent accounts for like half their income, they'd be out on the streets in no time. A single bedroom in Dublin is 2k euros/mo, yikes. Geedeepee go up though.

>>10471
I don't see how it could be that much of an issue for a nation that has historically had little regard for the rights of an individual. Democracy, merchant republics, free cities, the right for self-determination etc has been a European gobbledygook. In China it's been the emperor and mandate of heaven. Not an expert of Asian history by any means but saw a documentary that claimed that even Mao took a few pages from the emperors' textbook, encouraging a cult of his own personality - and the citizens took well to it.
Is an illusion of choice, similar to the contemporary West with its play pretend elections, really essential for continued Chinese growth? It's not like their businesses wouldn't be able to see past the ruse, much like the western businesses are.
Chinese chairmen reign for along time and while each tries to leave a solid legacy behind, he has much more time than the western politicians do. He can plan decades ahead. Meanwhile, the elections in any western country with a semblance of sovereignty are an absolute circus, with no long-term planning in comparison.
Considering their population is already aging, would adding more elements of democracy lead them to the same pitfall the West is in? Candidates target the majority - boomers - promising them higher pensions - get voted in, want to stay for round 2 - actually enact these policies - young men strained, birth rates further drop - generation passes - the situation is even worse - etc.

Pissing off the United States (directly or by pissing off its master) is the number one way to make your country a shithole. Seeing how neither the US nor Israel are true democracies it just goes to show that the whole thing is irrelevant and it is bowing down to the "good guys" that elevates certain gulf states, doesn't it.

>I can say you would rather live in Ireland than the orange and red counties.
That is up for debate considering China is in the orange and for a young person there are just more opportunities there. If we were to take culture, ideology and race out of the question, focusing only on the economic side of things and the goal were to earn money, live without having to worry about being on time with the rent, start a family and I would rather move there than to Ireland. It is just more promising.
Had the same digital dystopia future with total surveillance and control over each person's expenditures not been looming over the rest of the world, the choice would've probably been different but the West is not resisting this course, it's simply lagging behind.

Anyhow, the colors in the graph are chosen based on the "economic freedom" and not gdp (not even adjusted for purchasing parity, yikes), so that warranted a closer look and I looked up the source of the graph. They use metrics such as "how easy it is to trade with other countries" or "how stable the currency is". Despite clothing and furbishing the entire world, China is ranked very low in the first category; perhaps they should adjust these metrics to account how strong citizens of each country are because in order to overcome such disadvantages and break through all the barriers Chinese merchants must be quite powerful indeed. #1 country in the "stable currency" category is.. Japan. The same Japan that is suffering from wage deprecation, with yen sliding against dollar, with the US having had to bail them out this summer, ha.

Overall the whole paper seems about as trustworthy at that "world press freedom rating" or whichever it was. They have their metrics, sure, but whether these metrics are adequate and also properly matched against each other (see also: HDI allowing for getting a high score despite performing abysmally in one criteria due to performing well in the other two).
The paper is authored by a bunch of dudes with surnames that don't raise concerns, sure, but one supposedly represents "Center for Freedom and Prosperity". The name seemed cringe enough to warrant a closer look.
>The Center for Freedom and Prosperity (CFP or CF&P) is an American nonprofit organization that advocates for flat taxes, territorial taxation systems, and offshore tax havens.[2] The organization and its subsidiary, Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation (a tax-exempt organization), publish studies and conduct seminars analyzing the benefits of jurisdictional tax competition, financial privacy and fiscal sovereignty.
These are probably the real metrics against which the countries in that list are measured. Whether conforming to them is the golden goose or not is, again, up for debate because surely there will be economists who have other points of view.
It's because of communism btw
Every "right wing authoritarian" country lost
Right wing countries are all jew property for 80 years at this point

The natural state of things since our ancestors came down from trees three and a half million years ago is warring tribes, until people figure out agriculture, then peasants ruled by brigands. It really is (for an individual anyway). Which is why having rights and liberties slowly but consistently peeled away for the past 25 years or so has been so disconcerting.
China isn't even truly communist anyhow, it's just overtly authoritarian. If the western governments weren't so inept and self-destructive, they would be reacting to its rise in a manner that benefits the individual more, but they have been doing the opposite instead.
