I dont think art memes are inherently bad but when theres someome who needs to shove their oc into every meme format possible it does make me think that a lot of artgiraffes are npcs with no original ideas. Theres also ones like the Frieren perspective one where it just feels like artgiraffes flexing on someone who was obviously an amateur which leaves a bad taste in my mouth

Artists in general do this, anime artists on twitter do it as well. People like participating in a trend because it makes them feel a sense of camaraderie with the others participating, like they're part of a community. Some artists seek that out

I'm not angry (same anon btw, just on mobile data atm) just I know from speaking with people and artists that it's a common misconception that Patreon makes any money at all. It's only a strong belief within the unemployed 16-22 range who haven't expurrienced a job yet

it isn't just patreon, xitter artists make a nice amount from commissions. they leverage that from views, impressions and overall popularity, which is the entire point of "trendslop". it isn't just a random folks having haha hoohoo fun in the internetz, in most cases it's just people looking to increment their income or even making their ends meet.

It depends where you live. Taking commissions from westerners living in a place with a weak currency is massive. I know an artist in Belarus who said he did a com that was equivalent to like half a months salary there.

yes, getting european or north american standard of minimum wage in a cheap place like Belarus is more than enough. but that wasn't my point, the other poster is making it seem like it's just a purely recreational hobby thing people do spontaneuously, and it isn't. i'm not saying you can't have fun making trend-chasing art, but there is an inevitably industrial aspect to it, even if the goal is just gaining popularity.

you don't necessarily need to "make it" but if you get a few bucks here and there... it's alright. for someone who doodles funny talking animals in the internet, that is
