Is it a career thing? An odd job to fill in the gap while looking for something more specific? A summer stint?  Probably different for everyone, but there's probably a career path possible that starts with that and leads to being a top chef or a manager of a fancy restaurant.

I dunno, people are different and for some a straightforward job 5 min from home with some kind of a path that leads to them eventually sitting in the office or strolling around his restaurant looking important and making sure everything is in order does seem like a solid plan.
It's not that different from grocery store cashiers, in some countries/areas where jobs aren't as abound this isn't that bad of a deal and is somewhat chill too.

Won't say I worked on fryers. But I have worked on a grill where I needed to pour oil down to grill some fish, chicken, beef and pork. The worse part is when the grease pops out of randomly and hits you in either the face, the neck, or worse the eyes. It burns like a mother fluffer.
I also did burn myself on the grill while cleaning it. The soap splashed and got on my arm burning off the skin leaving a nasty burn mark.
The only good thing I can say about cooking is never interacting with a single person.

Ive done the fast food gig a few times in my life and it really depends on the individual place. Local places can be pretty chill purely in terms of vibes but dont expect to be able to live off of your wages unless you're a manager, which you arent gonna be unless you kiss ass. I was a fry cook at McDonalds for a while until the franchise owner sperged out at me randomly one day and I knew it was time to find a better job after that. I worked at KFC after that, and I was getting paid pretty badly but I still have fond memories of it overall. It was pretty laid back and we got a free meal from the buffet every shift, and since I was a closer I got to take home a ton of unsold chicken most nights, and stuff like biscuits, sides and pot pies (BTW KFC pot pies are actually delicious, especially if you leave them in the fridge over night and heat them up in the oven. Definitely the best thing on the menu and I think a lot of people just don't know about it.)

OTOH I have nothing but horror stories for the time I was a dishie at an actual restaurant. That was genuinely the worst job I've ever worked and I reccomend you GTFO out of any place that you apply at and tries to offer you that position.

NTA but if I were starting over and as long as WFH wasn't a top priority, I'd commit to becoming a tradie instead. Have you explored this option? Is it possible to get an apprenticeship sort of job working with hvac, electricity, welding in your area? There is room for growth in those fields, specialists with experience are valued, they are virtually AI-proof, and after a some years you can start your own business eliminating the middle man if the local companies don't pay enough. Just as long as getting the necessary paperwork to obtain a loicense is realistically feasible.
