It's a horror story about AI and dating. One of the recurring points is that when we have a system that gives men and women what they seek out instinctively, we will see simulations of greater and greater sexual dimorphism because we seek it out instinctively, without conscious understanding, and right now the universe doesn't oblige our fantasies.
He says that we will see the phenomenon of the supernormal stimulus, but in an erotic context. You know how certain species of birds will ignore their real eggs if you put a phony plastic egg in their nests that sort of resembles the real thing but is bigger and more brightly colored than their real eggs, so they abandon their real eggs to take care of the brightly colored cartoony-looking fake because it presses their buttons harder? When sexbots become practical and common and men can live their fantasies, they will want tangible "real" anime catgirls, and women will want ten-foot-tall robot werewolf demons built like a young Schwarzenegger. And as men and women are given what they want, they will seek more and more extreme stimuli, and their sexualities will become utterly unrecognizable, incomprehensible, and, to us, the readers and observers of this fictional setting, horrifying. At the climax of the book, at an orgy the viewpoint character watches woman is having sex with a semi-robotic, semi-organic, partially genetically engineered slimy tentacled mass. Suddenly the "shoggoth" dismembers and devours her, then the crowd of revelers.
