This one is kind of reminiscent of Vagrant Holiday's crash course on trainhopping. This one's aimed at the actual railroad workers instead, obviously.
It could be the survivorship bias, but old documentaries often feel more comprehensive. Topics like electricity, radars, car clownfishmissions etc. Perhaps it is due to them being generally slower paced and allowing the viewer to consider what they are being shown, before moving onto the next thing. Or perhaps this is also to do with them coming up with better analogies.

What is that flag?  The South Carolina flag is one palmetto tree in white centered on a field of blue with a crescent moon.  The Civil War Palmetto Guard flag had a single palmetto tree in the center and a five-pointed star in the upper left corner.  What am I looking at?  Also she looks like she's having entirely too much fun.

The only things that come to mind are that either the artist decided that those stitching pre-mass-production flags would sometimes take certain liberties with those, or moved the tree closer to the corner to make for a better composition. 
Looks too deliberate to be a mistake.

I don't think that Yes Minister is all that obscure, but yes, I did watch it recently and it is good. Same person also recommended 'The Thick Of It', also about the British Civil Service, a sort of stylistically and thematically 'post-modernist' "response to" Yes Minister and more reflective of the Civil Service of the time it was made (2004-2012). Wherein the foil is less often internal scheming and self-interest and instead general incompetence and petty squabbles stemming from declined human capital. Neither a TV or a documentary but I also recommend 'A House of Dynamite' in a similar vein. Decades of poor DEI human capital build-up and corruption in the U.S.G. being reaped all at once, that's the only coherent read that can be made of the film. FrenziedFish has talked about it more in-depth on X and Letterboxd. I couldn't recommend any documentaries that you wouldn't already be familiar with, maybe you'd find 'Koyaanisqatsi' (1982) interesting, I think it made an impression on Boyd Rice.

I have heard a story about a guy who served in the Seabees during the war and was trained as a heavy equipment operator. After he got out he was able to buy a war surplus bulldozer at scrap metal prices. The military was getting rid of shiploads and trainloads of equipment in 1946.  He got a bulldozer for a couple hundred bucks--more money then but not out of reach for a frugal man who had banked his combat pay--and got a bulldozer with an engine that had a blown head gasket. Such was the ferocious rate at which American factories had produced them that it was frequently faster and easier to get a new bulldozer than to fix an engine.  The engine still started up and ran but antifreeze was mixing with the motor oil because of the gasket.  So, being a bright guy, he drained the radiator and filled it up with used dirty motor oil.  Oil doesn't conduct heat as well as water does, and he could only run it half an hour before the engine overheated. But he was a very skilled bulldozer guy, and he could get a lot done in half an hour.

He was in California and he got in on the earth-shattering postwar housing boom around Los Angeles.  He made a shitload of money and by 1950 he owned his own construction company. He was a millionaire by 1960. So when he retired his Boomer kids ran the business into the ground and squandered all the money within a few years.  Them's the breaks, I guess.

I was always told that you can't change cold oil, that it HAS to be boiling hot or it won't all drain properly.  But maybe 0w16 and 0w8 synthetic oil doesn't behave the same way.  Also there really should be 0w0 oil, just for the memes.
